Burn Notice

“Michael, you’re fired.”
The words shot into his skull like a bullet from a Sig.Â
Jones leaned forward in his oversized chair, pushed a package forward. “You’re got USD$10,000, along with a new passport and identify papers. There’s the code to a Swiss bank account with $1,000,000 in it. When you leave here, another operative will take you to the airport. You’ll board a private flight for the Czech Republic and after that, you’re on your own.”
Michael slumped forward, leaning his forearms on his knees and running his hands through his short, brown hair. After a few moments he stood up, taking the package.
He turned to leave. Jones pulled himself up and moved around the desk.
“Michael, I’m sorry. You’re one of the best and I’m sorry it had to end this way.”
“For 15 years I’ve worked under cover. I’ve followed every order, I’ve sacrificed my life, my family and my reputation. And you say you’re sorry?” His hand rested on the brass doorknob. “You know what? I’m the one who’s sorry. Sorry I ever listened to a word you said. Sorry I didn’t walk away when I was a naive college kid, thinking I was going to save the world.”
“Michael, you shot the President of the United States. I know it was an accident, but what choice do you think I have? You are the most wanted man in the world. Once word gets out, the CIA cannot, will not protect you.”
Michael stepped through the door and clicked it quietly closed behind him.
