Everyone has heard of Feng Shui, but what exactly is it?

It’s a Chinese traditional belief that involves the finding a balance between nature’s environment and man’s created environment.  When the 2 levels of energy are balanced, it positively impacts both the home or office and its occupants.

There are 7 commonly used Schools Of Feng Shui.  Each school is influenced by culture, geography, and religion.

1. The Compass School uses the I-Ching.  The 8 tri-grams of the I-Ching are known collectively as Pa Kua and are based on the 8 main directions of a compass. Each direction is associated with a specific chi, or energy.

2. The Form School is based on the contours of the surrounding landscape.  It relies on the identification of  4 symbolic animals within the landscape.  This type of Feng Shui raises chi in and around the home.

3. The Black Hat School assigns each area of the home to a specific part of one’s life, such as relationships, wealth and education.  It uses a fixed entry point to determine the area.  The Black Hat Sect schools also incorporates psychology, Buddhism and basic design principles.

4. 8 Mansion or 8 House School, draws on the personal number of the person(s) living in the home. One’s personal number is used to bring harmony and balance to the home. People who use this system have both lucky and unlucky numbers

5. The 9 Star Key School uses stars to help identify lucky and unlucky days. This school of thought uses complicated math formulas to pinpoint when a person will get married and the astrological sign of the future marriage partners.

6. The Flying Star School is one of the most prevalent forms of Feng Shui and is also used to predict a person’s future.  It uses astrology and numerology and is based on mathematical principals.

7. Less common than the other schools, Four Pillars, is predominantly astrological and is frequently used to determine a persons future.

5 Elements Of Feng Shui

They are: Earth, Fire, Water, Metal, and Wood. Balance and harmony can be created in a home through the use of these elements. If used incorrectly, however, the energy can be lessened or even destroyed.

Each of the 5 elements is also associated with a direction:

Earth — Southwest
Fire — South
Water — North
Metal — West
Wood — East

Beauty And Balance

In a Feng Shui home, all rooms should achieve a balance of these elements, although some items may weigh heavier than others. A chair mightbe more significant than a cushion, for example, because of the size difference.

Feng Shui can bring both beauty and harmony to the home or work environment.
